A Penny For My Thoughts
2013
NECKPIECE (copper, brass, steel, penny)
This was an object that definitely knew its own thoughts as it just kept writing its story while it was being fabricated.
It started as a simple pendulum. Then it acquired a penny. An unsightly gap (well, at least to me...) in the mechanism made me add the hand-pierced script tag. This would, in turn, refuse to oxidise due to some unforeseen contamination in the metal and turned out beautifully corroded. So there was only one thing to do: totally trash the back plate with stones and hammers and finally turn the whole object into a neck piece with a steel and brass chain. Sometimes you've just got to love it when your work knows where it's going even before you do!
I love this piece of jewellery to bits. It is one of those I could never let go of. And it does get worn rather a lot!
